    Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is one of the 19 zones of Indian Railways, that was officially carved out from the North Eastern Railway to better serve the northeastern states. NFR operates across Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, and all seven northeastern states, managing five divisions: Katihar, Alipurduar, Lumding, Rangiya, and Tinsukia. Known for its challenging terrain and scenic routes, NFR plays a vital role in regional connectivity, freight movement, and tourism. It also manages the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. NFR is actively involved in infrastructure modernization, electrification, and strategic connectivity projects under the Government of India’s “Act East” policy.
